Measure the cat, not only the breed
Maine Coons and other large cats vary greatly in body length, chest depth, shoulder height, weight, coat volume and preferred sleeping position. A breed label or weight range is not enough to confirm fit. Always compare your cat's own measurements with the usable internal dimensions, openings, adjustment range and stated load limit on the product page.
How to measure your cat
Use a soft measuring tape while your cat is standing naturally. Keep the tape close to the coat without pulling it tight. Take each measurement twice and use the larger result when the coat is especially full.
- Body length: measure from the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades, to the base of the tail. Do not include the tail.
- Chest girth: measure around the widest part of the chest, directly behind the front legs.
- Neck: measure where a collar or harness would naturally sit. Allow room for two fingers unless the product instructions specify otherwise.
- Shoulder height: while your cat stands on a level surface, measure vertically from the floor to the top of the shoulder blades.
- Resting length: measure the space your cat uses when curled comfortably, then again when stretched out.

Product-specific checks
Beds, caves and tunnels
Check the internal sleeping area, not only the overall external dimensions. Openings should be wide enough for your cat's shoulders and coat. If your cat sleeps fully stretched, compare the usable length with that resting position.
Cooling mats
Compare the usable cooled surface with your cat's torso and preferred sleeping position. A mat that only supports the front half of the body may not provide the intended comfort for a larger cat.
Harnesses
Measure both neck and chest. Never choose from weight alone. After fitting, check that straps do not rub behind the front legs and that your cat cannot reverse out of the harness. Introduce harnesses indoors and supervise use.
Cat trees, enclosures and scratchers
Compare platform size, opening size, overall height and verified load rating. Place tall furniture on a level surface and use wall anchoring when the manufacturer supplies or recommends it. Recheck fasteners regularly.
Before ordering
- Use the larger of two measurements if your results differ.
- Allow extra room for a thick seasonal coat and natural movement.
- Check every listed dimension, not just the product name or the model cat shown in photographs.
- If a critical internal dimension or load rating is not stated, contact Fernva before purchasing.
Important: Do not select a product only because it is described as suitable for Maine Coons. Individual cats differ, and product suitability always depends on verified measurements, behaviour and supervised use.
